introduction |
|
Ivo van Emmerik (Amsterdam, 1961) most often writes music which only
attains its definite form at the actual moment of performance. His
compositions have been fittingly described as Ôliquid architectureĠ and his
method of working can best be compared to the designing of music producing
machines than to the making of unchangeable sound objects. Nonetheless his
work does not deal with improvisation in the common sense of the word, but
the musicians do enjoy a certain degree of liberty through a flexible use of
tempo and varied forms of coordination. Time
and timbre and its attendant avoidance of virtuosity play a prominent part in
Van Emmeriks music. In many cases a motif is recycled in various compositions
and thus put into a new context. In that way, a multiplicity of meanings
arises from one single musical idea. Van Emmerik often collaborated with other artists in works that
combine sound, text and image and he composed music for interactive
electronic media. Moreover, he has written solo works, chamber music and
orchestral works that have been performed throughout Europe by some of the
finest musicians. Ivo van Emmerik currently teaches music of the twentieth century at
the ArtEZ Conservatory in Zwolle. For an overview of published scores and a short biography: donemus For scores (except those published at Donemus) and other information:
